With each new program, the Groupe des aidants du Sud-Ouest (GASO) offers art therapy groups specifically designed for caregivers. Explore how art can become a space for expression in this article, drawn from an exclusive interview with Samantha Dobbin, our certified art therapist.

What is art therapy?

Art therapy uses artistic creation as a means of expression, self-understanding, and well-being. No artistic skill is required: what matters is the process, not the result. In a safe and supportive environment, art becomes a tool to explore emotions and foster awareness.

How does a workshop take place?

The workshop begins with a welcoming moment where everyone shares how they are doing. A theme is then proposed, accompanied by suggestions to explore it through art. Everyone creates freely, then the group takes time to observe and share around the creative process. The workshop ends with a short collective closing.

What are the benefits?

Creating brings relaxation, self-awareness, and calmness. The workshop also offers a non-judgmental space to express oneself, validate emotions, unleash creativity, and better navigate difficult times.

And creativity in all this?

Creativity is seen as a tool for well-being, not as a performance. It is not necessary to have talent: art is a language accessible to everyone, just like speech. The workshop allows one to reconnect with spontaneity, imagination, and the inner child, often set aside in daily life.

Testimonials or anecdotes

Many people arrive feeling blocked, unsure, or disconnected from their emotions. Along the way, they learn to listen to what they are experiencing, express themselves more freely, and cultivate kindness towards themselves.
