Preventing ageism in everyday life

Jan 6, 2026
Ageism doesn't always manifest itself in obvious ways. It can slip into a tone of voice, an awkward word, a decision made 'for the good' of someone else without asking for their opinion.
These actions, often well-intentioned, sometimes reveal deeply ingrained prejudices about age—reminding us that ageism is found as much in our everyday habits as in our institutions.
Preventing it daily starts with becoming aware of these automatisms and allowing ourselves the right to question them. It means giving everyone the opportunity to express their needs, strengths, and limits, without assuming their abilities or desires.
It also involves recognizing the value of all generations: that of transmission, listening, and sharing experiences. By changing the way we speak and choosing a curious rather than condescending perspective, we help build an environment where both being young and growing older are associated with dignity and inclusion.
Preventing ageism is, above all, a matter of attitude and respect that begins in our conversations, actions, and the way we approach others—regardless of their age.
