What forms can respite take?

There are several types of respite services. However, understanding the different options and knowing how to access them can be quite a challenge! Therefore, we aim to demystify the various options available by describing them and presenting the benefits of each one. We also invite you to contact a GASO worker to help you find suitable respite resources based on your needs.

🏡 In-home Respite

A person comes to your home to temporarily take over for the person being cared for.

👥 Sources: CLSC, community organization, social economy business, private agency

Benefits: Allows the caregiver to leave the house with peace of mind while reassuring the person being cared for who remains in their usual environment.

Duration: from a few hours to several days


🌞 Day Centre Respite

The person being cared for spends a full day or half-day in a specialized centre.

🏠 Locations: Day centre via the CLSC, activities centre of an organization or a social economy business

✅ Benefits: Allows the caregiver to enjoy a break while the person being cared for benefits from stimulating activities in a safe and adapted environment.

⏳ Duration: several hours to a full day, sometimes several days a week


🛟 Temporary Accommodation

The person being cared for stays for a few days or weeks in a specialized facility.

🏥 Locations: CHSLD, private residence

✅ Benefits: An ideal solution for extended breaks (holidays, hospitalization, etc.)

⏳ Duration: from a few days to several weeks
